Chickens are the medieval crew in the farm scene. The hens running around remind me of ladies with skirts and bloomers and the cocks strutting in their finest attire attempting at every turn to woo the ladies. The whole affair becomes comical the more you pay attention. Every breed has a different personality and if you stick with the medieval theme each type of breed could fall into its own caste. There are the meat breeds that tend to be more royal in nature, fat and lazy expecting you to do all the work. The meat and egg breeds, in the kings court but smarter and less lazy, they still expect some coddling but contribute eggs, and forage some.

Then there are the showy varieties, nobles raised for their looks and stature, eggs being just a fact of life for a chicken and so are of little import. This brings us to the wilder breeds, the peasants, smart, resourceful, great foragers, that hatch and raise their own young while providing eggs for food. Not great for eating as they tend to be slow growing and a bit tough.
As with choosing any breed of animal for your farm, you must first know what you want to get out of raising it. |
