Chicken Tractor FAQ's
What are chicken tractors?
Moveable housing that allows chickens direct contact to the ground while protecting them from predators. Chicken Tractors also help to corral the chickens where you want them. Chickens natural instinct is to scratch for their food, like a dance -scratch scratch peck , peck peck scratch scratch... On and on throughout the day...
Why do I want a chicken tractor in my garden?
If you have a garden you will have garden waste and a need to compost, and turn in that compost. Chickens, if placed in the garden can take care of these things while you sip tea under the shade of your favorite tree.
The dance of the chicken, described earlier, fluffs and churns the top layer of soil encouraging the Garden wastes to compost quickly. Chicken wastes are distributed into this churny fluffing, placing needed nitrogen in the soil. The chicken tractor can also help prep beds for each season of planting, just place them where you need things cleared out.
What about care and feeding once I have them?
Chickens need very little in the way of care. Shelter from wind and rain, fresh water and good feed every day are about it. You will need to monitor the ground they are on, adding leaves and yard or garden waste as they scratch things in. How often you move the tractor will depend on how many chickens, and space you have.
Don't chickens stink?
100 chickens in a confined space will stink. Any animal in a confined space will stink. What causes the stink is having too much poo and too little carbonaceous material. Adding leaves from the yard and green waste (both carbonaceous materials) from your garden and kitchen, combined with periodic moving of your tractor to different locations keep the right proportions and the stink away.
